What is a “Roots Blower”?

Roots Blower was invented by brothers Philander and Francis Marion Roots in 1860 in the USA. “Roots” was derived from brothers’ surname. Invention of roots type rotary blowers has been a defining moment in industry. These superchargers have been run in many pressure or vacuum applications in industry.

A roots blower is a mechanical machine that is a type of positive displacement pumps. Rotary air blowers are technically employed for pumping fluid which is air and neutral gases. Roots blowers are utilized in many industrial areas in which vacuumized or pressurized air or neutral gases are required. Positive displacement rotary lobe pump, roots blower, provides high air flow rates. Rotary blowers generate pressure over the atmospheric pressure, called pressure roots blowers, and when they are utilazed in vacuum process, roots-type blowers generate negative pressure, called vacuum roots blowers, under the atmospheric pressure. Roots blower pumps mainly consist of two lobed cycloidal rotors (impellers), blower housing, bearings and timing gears.
A roots blower, mechanical booster, is not only employed in pressure lines, but also used in vacuum systems in which big amount gas stack is pumped in medium level vacuum volumes have to be pumped down in a comparatively short period. Rotary positive blowers are utilized as primary pumps at medium level vacuum systems. They are also used as backing pump at rough vacuum systems where high-vacuum pumps are employed as primary pump. Rough vacuum is between atmospheric pressure and 1 mbar, as for medium vacuum, it is between from 1 to 10-3 mbar. Using roots type blower has another great benefit at vacuum systems: there is no contamination. The vacuum system is protected from contamination of particles and oil by thanks to the clean air or gas produced by the root blower pumps.

Roots Blower is a positive displacement pump.

The Roots blowers and compressors are both important machines for industrial applications, but there are some basic differences between two mechanisms. First, both possess different working principles. The roots blower sucks ambient air or gas into blower body and turns the air into pressurized air with rotating rotors. In other words, blowers do not compress the air internally in order to produce pressure and volume.
On the other hand, compressors (derivated from compress word) compress the air to convert it pressurized. Second, while roots blowers can create low pressure at high volume, the compressors make high pressure at low volume. The capacity of blowers is upto 1 bar at 15.000 m3/h. whereas compressors’ one is 10 bars. In conclusion, roots blower is not essentially a compressor, albeit it is generally regarded as a compressor.

How does a “Roots Blower” operate?

There are two pieces of lobed rotors which are placed inside the blower body (housing). Rotors, called also as impellers, rotate non-contactly in opposite direction. Rotors are called twin-lobe ((bi-lobe) or three-lobe (tri-lobe) according to possessing lobe numbers. One is “driving rotor” that is generally worked by an electrical motor and the other one is “driven rotor” that is worked by gears attached to the driving rotor. The air is sucked through intake part into the blower body and it is pushed as pressurized towards outlet part of blower. This is definition of how to ambient air has been converted to pressurized air. That is the reason how air is converted to the pressure air. This is working principle of all roots blowers.
